Southwest Airlines pilots and vaccination

While this story is over two weeks old on this posting date, it is one not much heard about in British news reports, which are even stricter in not reporting newsworthy items which go against the government line of “vaccines for all”. The idea of any influential group protesting against mandatory vaccine mandates is obviously not palatable as it might make more people in the UK stand up and protest against increasing vaccine mandates for employment here. Southwest Airlines Pilots Association has filed a court suit against the mandate – read more in the article at this link.

“The new vaccine mandate unlawfully imposes new conditions of employment and the new policy threatens termination of any pilot not fully vaccinated by December 8, 2021,” the legal filing said.

Very revealing in the Bloomberg news report was the following statement:

Pilots are at a unique risk because adverse reactions to a vaccine could affect their ability to pass periodic medical examinations required to maintain their license. The union wants to negotiate, among other things, how such instances would be covered by long-term disability policies.” [our emphasis added]

Other airline pilots have also protested the mandates, for example United Airlines. Earlier this month (October) the airline had planned to sack about 2,000 employees (technically on ‘unpaid leave’) for seeking an exemption from its vaccine mandate – but this was temporality put on hold by a federal judge in Texas.

The official airline explanations attempt to cover up the reasons for flight cancellations as well as the reasons for the pilot disputes.

Comments from or about pilots:

“My friends husband is a pilot and this is coming to an airport near you. More than 50% of pilots have walked and will not negotiate.”

“I’m a pilot. People need to stand up and start calling their legislators.”

“I was scratching my head when Southwest stated that bad weather was a major cause of the cancellations. The weather was remarkable clear over the U.S. during that time. Blatant lying by Southwest and our mediocre and bought news organizations.”

In the meanwhile, AwakenWithJP has created an enlightening satire on the subject, to which one viewer commented: “It’s a strange world when JP’s satire is more believable than Southwest’s actual explanation!”

  1. Take into account that the vaccinated passengers can still transmit the disease. So if there is one person on the flight transmitting the disease then all passengers will be at risk as the same air is being recycled throughout the flight. In the case of airline pilots and other staff the risk factor is multiplied many times as they have to make more flights.
