Fearless Speech

Articles on this topic follow. The book which we take the section title from and the principle of ‘fearless speech’ is also given below. Also below is about fear itself, how it affects us (see also under Natural Health) and how it is used for control. The general theme is about those who are not afraid to speak up, having courage in spite of their views being different from a prevailing ‘group-think’.

Ponderous words

“One must always repeat the truth, because error is also always preached around us, and not by individuals, but by the masses. In newspapers and encyclopaedias, in schools and universities, error is holding sway everywhere, and it is comfortable and at ease in the feeling of the majority of people, who are on its side.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Fearless words and free speech

The following quote is attributed to Voltaire:
I disagree with everything you say, but would give my life fighting for you to have the right to say it.’
– Called the Voltairean Principle by Evelyn Beatrice Hall in 1919.

Words to be (extremely!) wary of –

“We will continue to be your single source of truth”
“Unless you hear it from us, it is not the truth.

Jacinda Ardern, former Prime Minster of New Zealand

Words like that, from a politician, demand a ‘fearless speech’ response, as they are words you expect not from a leader of a democracy but of a tyrant…

Andrew Bridgen’s address to the people

The address below was given by Andrew Bridgen MP on 29 October 2023 from Breedon on the Hill Church – in a call to the people of the UK to be aware of what is happening and “to say, NO”.

“The tide is turning” he says. A short video, an excellent speech.

Psychotherapy, Politics and the “Common Factor” of Power

by Richard House, PhD, University of Roehampton, London, UK

Psychotherapy and Politics International
Psychother. Politics. Int. (2012), Published online in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com), DOI: 10.1002/ppi.1260

In writing this impressionistic contribution to the theme of this journal’s title, psychotherapy and politics, I find myself wanting to write, very selectively and partially, about power. One of the arguable shortcomings of the psychological therapies field is that, with some very notable and honourable exceptions (e.g., Embleton Tudor & Tudor, 1994; Guggenbühl-Craig, 1998; Guilfoyle, 2008; Hook, 2002, 2007; Larner, 1999; Lomas, 1987; Proctor, 2002; Smail, 2005; Totton, 2006), the question of power has not remotely been engaged with as widely or as deeply as it surely needs to be (House, 2008). As Foucault (2002) helped us to understand, power is everywhere, whether it be overtly and more formally exercised, as in institutional politics, or less tangibly, through its diverse and richly textured exercising in all human relational situations. So, in this brief contribution, I want to speak of “politics” in a broad rather than in a narrower sense – for everything, including “the personal”, is in some sense necessarily political (Embleton Tudor and Tudor, 1994, p. 385). From this it follows that therapists cannot but engage with “politics” in this more general sense, simply by virtue of the kind of human relational work we choose to do. In this spirit, the great R. D. Laing himself came up with a book title that resounds across the decades, that is, The Politics of Experience (Laing, 1967, my emphasis).

A new book coming out 30th November 2021:

Pandemia: How Coronavirus Hysteria Took Over Our Government, Rights, and Lives

by Alex Berenson

The most important fact about the coronavirus pandemic that turned the world upside down in 2020 is that our response to it has been an epic overreaction driven by a disastrous confluence of public and private interests–all of them purporting to “follow the science.” …

The product of relentless investigation and research, Pandemia explains how an illness that many people will never even know they had became the occasion for economically ruinous lockdowns and the suppression of personal freedom on a previously unimaginable scale. Dispassionate, factual, and untainted by any agenda other than telling the truth, this is the account that pandemic-weary Americans desperately need.

From online book review

Now just out – 16th November 2021!

Robert F Kennedy Jr’s new book, THE REAL ANTHONY FAUCI

With help from pharma-funded mainstream media and captured regulatory agencies, “Fauci” became a household name — and in the minds of millions of Americans, the man morphed into a hero.
With your help, Fauci’s hero status is about to go down in flames.

Lord Sumption’s words on lockdowns and Civil Disobedience

ON CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE
“Sometimes the most spirited thing you can do with despotic laws like these is to ignore them. I think if the government persists long enough with locking people down, depending on the severity of the lockdown, that civil disobedience is likely to be the result. It will be discrete civil disobedience in the classic English way — I don’t think that we are likely to go onto the streets waving banners. I think we will just calmly decide that we are not going to pay any attention to this…”

ON THE ETHICS OF LAW-BREAKING
“I feel sad that we have the kind of laws which public-spirited people may need to break. I have always taken a line on this, which is probably different from that of most of my former colleagues. I do not believe that there is a moral obligation to obey the law… You have to have a high degree of respect, both for the object that the law is trying to achieve, and for the way that it’s been achieved. Some laws invite breach. I think this is one of them.”

ON THE DANGERS OF PUBLIC FEAR
“John Stuart Mill regarded public sentiment and public fear as the principal threat to a liberal democracy. The tendency would be for it to influence policies in a way that whittles away the island within which we are entitled to control our lives to next to nothing. That’s what he regarded as the big danger. It didn’t happen in his own lifetime; it has happened in many countries in the 20th century, and it’s happening in Britain now.”

Lord Sumption, retired Supreme Court justice, spring 2021, in an interview with Freddie Sayers of Unherd

Lord Sumption‘s strongest words were with regard to the government’s laws enabling it to institute severely restrictive lockdowns. While we are not in lockdown as we write this (October 2021), there is a good chance the government will try resorting to such measures again. We need to be prepared, ready to realise the voice of conscience and common sense which says that such measures are not only entirely uncalled for (even the WHO warned against) but also hitherto unheard of in democratic societies for the severe restrictions they place on our freedom of movement as well as speech.

For a more complete script of the interview, and for the video of the complete interview itself, aired on Lockdown TV, click on this link:

On Lockdown, bringing a similar view though for different reasons, is Anders Tegnell, Swedish epidemiologist made famous for his in 2020 controversially very different policies from most other countries. He was, namely, absolutely against lockdowns, keeping schools and stores open, saying that epidemiologically, the lockdowns were unjustified. By some he was villianised for this, by others considered a hero. Now in September 2021 he gives an interview with Unherd, feeling he has been vindicated for the approach he has taken. Sajid Javid Vs Dr. Steve James

In early January 2022 Health Secretary Sajid Javid was challenged by unvaccinated hospital consultant Steve James (ITU consultant anaesthetist) over the government’s policy of compulsory COVID jabs for NHS staff. Congratulations to Dr James for his courage. He has since been on countless interviews and even BBC programmes for his stance, which is a very reasonable, somewhat middle of the road stand on vaccines in general but very specific about a) people must have freedom of choice, with b) a vaccine that is both still experimental and without convincing data on its benefits.

Here is the video below.

A modern day challenge of David vs Goliath reaps its rewards — this time with 5G in the USA

The telecommunications industries as well as the government regulatory agencies have repeatedly failed to consider or even acknowledge evidence of negative health effects from Radio Frequency radiation from mobile phones and phone towers. Through the courage of individuals and groups in the US who challenged the FCC on this, a high level court of appeals has ruled in their favour, directing the FCC to reconsider evidence. Congratulations to all those involved for their fortitude, determination and courage — for their fearless speech! — in daring to go against the ‘mainstream’ views of industry, and showing the supposed ‘independent regulatory agency’ to be totally entwined (in bed with?) the very industry they are supposed to regulate.

An excerpt from the Environmental Health Trust news release is below — click on the photo for more information on the EHT website.

———

Today [on 13th August], the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in the historic case EHT et al. v. the FCC that the December 2019 decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to retain its 1996 safety limits for human exposure to wireless radiation was “arbitrary and capricious.”

  • The court held that the FCC failed to respond to “record evidence that exposure to RF radiation at levels below the Commission’s current limits may cause negative health effects unrelated to cancer.”
  • Further, the agency demonstrated “a complete failure to respond to comments concerning environmental harm caused by RF radiation.”

“Courage is contagious” – Julian Assange, WikiLeaks

“ONE OF THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF MEDIA IS KEEPING GOVERNMENTS AND CORPORATIONS ACCOUNTABLE, PUBLISHING INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN LABELLED ‘CLASSIFIED’ AGAINST THE INTERESTS OF THE PUBLIC, WORKS TOWARDS THAT ACCOUNTABILITY.”

Courage is especially needed in our time to face up to and challenge the narrative being presented by government and media surrounding Covid. Julian Assange had the courage with WikiLeaks, and his courage in exposing war crimes during the Iraq war landed him in isolation then in prison. The story of this is now in a YouTube video, The Assange Story; links to this and a short write-up can be downloaded as PDF by clicking here. Alternately, click here for the Independent Viewpoints WikiLeaks webpage with respective links and where you can view the video.

“One of the hopeful things I’ve discovered is that nearly every war that has started in the past 50 years has been the result of media lies. What does that mean? That means, basically, populations don’t like wars, and populations have to be fooled into wars.”

Julian Assange, Interview 2011 (from the film, ‘The Assange Story’ – see link above)

The court case involving US extradition requests for Julian Assange is ongoing. On 4th January 2021 a UK judge blocked his extradition to the USA, and the Australian government a short while afterwards said he could return to his home country when legal challenges end. The US government has appealed 4th January judgement against extradition, and on 8th July 2021 won the right to appeal. Assange remains in the high security Belmarsh Prison, with further bail refused.

Further details on the Assange extradition case up to July 2021 is written up in this report (click here). In the meanwhile he celebrated his 50th birthday on 3rd July, having spent a decade confined to Ecuador’s London embassy, where he sought asylum, and then Belmarsh.

You’ve Been Programmed

Our current ill-health has nothing to do with a pathogenic particle that passes between us in ‘droplets’. Unfortunately we’ve been programmed to believe that it does. What’s to be done?

To undo the programming, let’s start by going back to 1910, when John D. Rockefeller, the richest man in the world, hired a contractor named Abraham Flexner to write a report on healthcare for the US Congress. Duly flexing his hired muscles, Flexner wrote a report that was music to Rockefeller’s ears. He diagnosed America as having too many doctors and too many medical schools, and recommended that these be slimmed down, centralised and reorganised in such a way that all pre-existing schools of ‘natural healing’ were drummed out of business for engaging in quackery. This pivotal event is the root of today’s ‘allopathic’ system of medicine – a pharmaceutically driven system that looks at disease with the single-minded intention of treating it with synthetic, petrochemical-based drugs developed by billionaire-funded universities and institutes.

What an enormous stroke of luck this was for John D. Rockefeller. He already controlled the US petroleum industry, and knew exactly how to pump wealth out of the American people by exploiting the power of large, government-protected monopolies.

Once Congress had adopted Flexner’s recommendations, a newly empowered medical establishment went to work dividing diseases into various fiefdoms, the better to exploit them monetarily. In the realm of ‘infectious diseases’, there was already a bias in favour of believing that pathogens had to be responsible for any disease that spread. Scientists working on this presumption – notably Jenner and Pasteur (amongst the first to see bacteria through microscopes) – had gained far more notoriety and financial success than any of their ‘natural remedy’ contemporaries, especially through a practice of injecting patients with toxic heavy metals (lead and mercury) in order to ‘displace disease’.

Fast forward to today… Click here to read further, a very enlightening short essay contributed by AZB

The Government use of Fear for their own ends

We should all be familiar with how governments during ‘crisis’ times use media ‘hype’ and ‘propaganda’ to guide public response in the direction they wish to achieve. War times are typical examples. For the UK, most recent perhaps is the Iraq war where the imminent threat of weapons of mass destruction touching Europe and even English countryside was regularly paraded in the headlines. This brings up the issue of how false stories are used to achieve the ends which governments wish, as it became apparent not only that there were no weapons of mass destruction and that the government knew this beforehand. They used the threat to sow fear in the public and justify the reasons for their actions – war. It took a fearless and courageous whistleblower in GCHQ to speak up, leaking information to the press on how the government knew they were lying. That was in the days when some of the press dared to say things contrary to the government! It is more difficult now.

Politicians know that the truth will out, eventually, but by then, if they maintain a story long enough and contain the leaks, they will have achieved what they wanted. And people are forgetful, even if the truth makes headlines for a few times: confound people with distractions, throw in other news, and presto! Forgotten – and the cycles start over again.

Yes, you would think by now we should be alert to the use of propaganda during ‘crisis’ times or when rulers turn into tyrants – it’s been done down the ages. Etienne de La Boetie spoke of it in his writings of the 16th century! See for instance his book (translated from French), The Politics of Obedience (also published under the title, The Will to Bondage). What is deeply worrying is when truth is manipulated and fear used in a democracy in a time of (relative!) peace. As La Boetie outlines, it is a first step towards tyranny – a politician’s desire for control and power. It can happen almost subconsciously: politicians in positions of power, get caught up in that power, and look to increase it. Sometimes, if not often, for financial gains as well.

We see it happening now during the Corona crisis. Alarm bells should have sounded when the government early on spoke of this as a war on Covid. That is ‘government speak’ to mean that anything goes to achieve their ends. While some had spoken of it earlier, in January 2021 reports started coming out about how much the government had been consciously using fear tactics to ‘direct’ public responses, guided in the process by scores of behavioural psychologists, such as the Behaviour Insight Team and others. Click here for a link to a newspaper article about an open letter in January from 47 psychologists criticising the government tactics. The government, of course, denied this, even though SAGE minutes from March 2020 indicated otherwise.

Now further stories have been surfacing and a book written by Laura Dodsworth, A State of Fear, who spent the last year researching the government tactics. The revelations have had even government psychologists admitting it was unethical. Click here and here for two newspaper articles. Also here for an excellent article by Gordon Raynor, ‘Life inside the fear factory: how the Government keeps us on high alert.’

‘This is an important book. The use of fear as a tool of political management is a major challenge to democracy which every one should reflect upon, whatever their view about lockdowns and Covid-19.’

Lord Sumption

Another book review by Jon Dobinson of Laura Dodsworth’s book can be found by clicking here. The following is from the beginning:

IN HER INTRODUCTION to ‘A State Of Fear’, Laura Dodsworth writes, “We don’t like to believe we can be manipulated, let alone that we have been manipulated – this book may hurt.”
Hurt it will, pitilessly exposing by turns the damage that fear has done to us over the past year, the way that terror eclipses reason or common-sense, and the way it has been weaponised to control us by the Government’s behavioural scientists. If you care about the future of liberty and democracy in the UK, this book will not help you sleep at night. It may however find a place at the top the pile on your bedside table…

BOOK REVIEW of: A State Of Fear by Laura Dodsworth, Pinter & Martin; paperback, £9.99. Published 17 May 2021

“It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion.”

“The rank and file are usually much more primitive than we imagine. Propaganda must therefore always be essentially simple and repetitious.”

Joseph Goebbels

Beyond a State of Fear: Menticide and Schizogenesis

An essay by Dr Bruce Scott

Around the 11th to 13th to the June, the world was exposed to the ugliest display of “one rule for us, another for the masses” when the G7 leaders met in Carbis Bay in Cornwall. You had the blatant “disregard” for the “climate crisis” with of all the leaders jetting in (including Boris Johnson from London) on planes, not requiring any form of quarantine like ordinary people. We were given the usual “social distanced” and masked photo opportunities to show off the delegates from the UK and the rest of the world, but you also had the pictures of care free delegates and guests (including the Queen and Prince Charles) at cocktail parties, ignoring distancing rules and of course with no need for masks. What was striking about these images was the smiling faces of Macron, Biden, Merkel (and wives/partners) et al, whilst at the same time the staff working the social events (e.g., waiters etc) were fully masked, like slaves waiting on their masters. The schism between the elites and ordinary people was laid bare for all the world to see…

Fear and Health –

This consideration is looked at more under the tab, Natural Health. But following on the Laura Dodsworth’s book description above about the misuse of fear for control purposes, it needs noting that she nowhere considers the significant negative effects of fear on health of the human being, making us far more vulnerable to infection and illness. This is outlines in further detail in Dr Thomas Hardtmuth‘s book, What Covid-19 Can Teach Us (May2021, InterActions £7.50) – follow the above link for more details. It is a deep irony that precisely the tactic being used to generate compliance and uptake of the Covid vaccines is at the same time making people much for vulnerable to the same illness. BigPharma is not complaining… (some articles on this also on the Natural Health page!)

Fearless Speech

by Michel Foucault, Semiotext, 2001, 192 pages

This volume gathers together a series of lectures given by Foucault on Parrhesia, the Greek notion of fearless speech. This Parrhesia decribes the speech of someone who has the moral qualities to speak the truth, even if it defies convention or arouses danger.

“My intention was not to deal with the problem of truth, but with the problem of the truth-teller, or of truth-telling as an activity: … who is able to tell the truth, about what, with what consequences, and with what relations to power …. [W]ith the question of the importance of telling the truth, knowing who is able to tell the truth, and knowing why we should tell the truth, we have the roots of what we could call the ‘critical’ tradition in the West.”
Michel Foucault
